Tertius: The Rise of Magic
The Ward has undergone many changes in the last 300 years. It was once called The Croplands, and surrounded the city with fields of crops and orchards of fruit, supplying for all the needs of the city. That all changed when the Dwarves installed their “floor” at the third layer of the city. This sealed off the fields, and despite various efforts to continue harvesting the land, the effort was eventually abandoned as a lost cause. Now, the bottom two layers of the city, and the Croplands with them, are virtual ghost lands. Nature has begun to reclaim the area, and when the occasional traveler journeys down there, they report back glowing eyes staring at them from the dark places between the strange and overlarge plants and vines that have crept over the old buildings and discarded farming equipment. Perhaps the only things harvested now from the ward are the plentiful and varied fungi and molds – by alchemists and poisoners alike. Many feel the layers should be completely sealed off, and refer to these “gardeners” as Dirt Thieves, giving rise to the slang term for the whole expanse – The Dirt.
